Real Ear Measurement (REM)
Making sure your hearing aids are perfectly adjusted for your ears.
What Is Real Ear Measurement?
Real Ear Measurement (REM) is a gold standard test performed during a hearing aid fitting. It ensures that your hearing aids are not only comfortable, but also delivering sound at the correct volume for your ears.
Unlike general programming based on averages, REM provides a personalized adjustment that matches your unique hearing profile.
How Does Real Ear Measurement Work?
The process is quick, comfortable, and completely painless:
- A small probe microphone is gently placed inside your ear canal.
- Sound is first measured naturally near your eardrum, without the hearing aid.
- Your hearing aids are then inserted and turned on.
- Various sounds at different volumes are played to assess accuracy.
- Your audiologist fine-tunes the settings until the amplification is just right.
This ensures that speech, music, and everyday sounds are crisp, natural, and comfortable — never too loud or distorted.

What to Expect at Your Appointment
Your Real-Ear Measurement (REM) session is typically included as part of your hearing aid fitting appointment. It only takes a few minutes and allows your audiologist to:
- Confirm that your hearing aids are programmed accurately
- Fine-tune the settings in real time
- Ensure the sound feels comfortable and natural, not too loud or harsh
After the session, we’ll also show you how to:
- Insert and remove your hearing aids properly
- Use advanced features such as Bluetooth connectivity
- Care for your devices to maintain their performance and longevity
